Staying Healthy While Traveling

Traveling is like a dream come true for many. Not only do you get to see the world and take in dozens of new experiences, but you also get to enjoy your time at Sea Pines Hilton Head where you can relax, away from the stress and boredom of daily life.

Unfortunately, travel is often when we make the unhealthiest decisions for our bodies.  From drinking more alcohol to sleeping less and forgetting to pace ourselves, you can get back from a vacation in worse shape than when you left.

Cook For Yourself Often

The best way to keep aware of what’s going into your body while also saving money is to cook for yourself as often as possible.  Not only does cooking for yourself gives you the chance to handpick ingredients and take the time to make healthier decisions: but you know every ingredient that’s going into it, so you don’t have to worry if a recipe is unhealthy or not.  Try to cook at least one time a day for yourself, although twice a day is better.  You can still enjoy local food but limit your unhealthy intake.

Get Plenty of Sleep

Travel is extremely hard on sleep schedules.  We’re in a new place, a new timezone, and a new bed, with plenty of exciting things to do just outside of our hotel.  Try to make sure you get at least seven and a half hours of sleep every night.  If you can, try to replicate the pre-sleep ritual you have at home as much as you can for yourself.  If this means taking twenty minutes before bed to read, or taking a hot bath every night you’re on vacation, do it!

Plan Breaks and Stops

Even if you’re working multiple travel jobs: you still have to take time to rest.  When we travel, we expend a lot of mental and physical energy getting to know the area, searching for events and attractions we want to see, and meeting new people.  This is very taxing on both our bodies and minds and needs to be taken into consideration.  Give yourself plenty of breaks, and listen to your body and mind.  If you’re feeling tired, stop and take a break.

Remember to Keep Active

Try to keep at least one form of physical activity in your day!  This might mean taking a jog on the beach first thing in the morning, or it could mean taking on more physical adventures like rock climbing or scuba diving.  You can still have fun with it!

Drink Plenty of Water

Water is vital to ensuring our bodies run well and are able to keep up with everything we want to do on vacation.  It’s especially important if you’re drinking or partying a lot while you’re traveling.  Carry a water bottle with you and try to refill it at least twice a day to get in a healthy amount of water while you’re exploring the world.

Traveling is Awesome and Can Be Healthy

Traveling doesn’t have to be unhealthy!  Make the most of it by keeping active and listening to your body’s needs.  You can come back from vacation healthier than when you left!
